Betta Nouveau by Morrgan Betta Nouveau by Morrgan
So I decided to toss the old pencils out the window and buy some proper ones. This is the first test with my fancy new Derwent Inktense pencils. I like them already.

I thought I'd draw a portrait of my favourite Siamese fighting fish (Betta splendens), affectionately called Stinky. I've drawn him several times before, but this time I seem to have gotten that Mucha exhibition I went to see a few weeks ago on the brain.

Dear old Stinky was a true gentleman among bettas and my first Siamese fighting fish. He was the biggest and frankly the most gorgeous fighter I've ever seen. He didn't bother the females or other smaller fish, but never hesitated to drive off any rival male who dared to appear (in the form of a mirror) with a fantastic show of fins and gills. He passed away many years ago, but I still remember him fondly.

Thanks! I took the liberty of adding the swirly bits to the fins, but otherwise it's pretty close. I don't have a photo of Stinky unfortunately, but I found one that's almost like him on the net: [link]

I chose this one from your gallery to comment on, simply because I love traditional pencil drawings, and also because it shows your talent in pencil shading. Also, because I used to own a Beta (who sadly died before his time) and I remember how absolutely beautiful they are. ;)

Nice touch on adding a 'fantasy' like background and the playful fins
Good work!

Betas work very well with art nouveau. You did a great job working with Mucha's detailed frames.

That is so beautiful. I love how the red and yellow contrasts with the blue and purple.

Looks very nice, I like the shadow effects you used for a more 3Dish effect.
I also really like your sense for detail. Nice shapes you used, also for the fish's tail.
Can't say anything negative about this, I like it and couldn't do it better :w00t:

very pretty, all of your lines look really straight and i love the way you made the ends of the fish tail curl so dramatically. nice color choices as well- this fish has a sort of elemental feeling to it-- like water/fire..etc all put together
